Lake Veere, eutrophic saline lake demonstration site

About
Lake Veere represents an important nature and recreation area. A lack of freshwater, sea level rise, increasing (water) temperatures and disturbance due to human activities challenge the environmental status of the lake. Lake Veere is currently an unstable ecosystem with a mismatch between the existing morphology and the current dynamics since the disappearance of tidal action. Stratification, combined with eutrophication and the accumulation of organic material, causes oxygen depletion, H₂S formation, and loss of benthic life.
In the vision 2030 for the area, a healthy waterbody forms the basis for all societal use. In the desired situation, the lake has clean and clear water, and most of the seabed provides suitable habitat for flora and fauna, including benthic species, macroalgae, and fish. There is a stable food web and a resilient ecosystem (robust nature). Shellfish such as oysters and mussels grow across the lakebed, forming biodiversity and fish hotspots. Where possible, the land–water transitions are gradual and are characterized by a gentle shift from freshwater to salt marsh vegetation.
In demonstration site lake Veere a number of nature-positive solutions will be tested and monitored:
· Local (short-term) technical measures to prevent stratification and oxygen depletion
· Gradual land-water transitions (funded through PAGW) to stimulate connectivity and increase natural habitats and biodiversity
· Bioremediation by plants of nutrients causing eutrophication or, if appropriate, by exploring de-coupling of hinterland waterways
· Local seagrass and shellfish restoration efforts
