About
BioAxFlow – dynamic 3D culture on scaffolds, made plug-and-play
Cellex is a Rome-based innovative SME that designs and manufactures patented bioreactors for cell culture and tissue engineering. BioAxFlow (patent WO2024/189527A1) is our perfusion bioreactor for dynamic 3D culture on scaffolds. It brings controlled fluid dynamics to the lab bench without complex setup or custom engineering.
Why it matters
Static culture on 3D scaffolds often gives poor cell seeding and uneven colonisation of the construct. BioAxFlow uses a controlled flow regime to improve how cells attach to and distribute across the scaffold. In published work on SAOS-2 cells seeded on PLA scaffolds, cell adhesion after 24 hours was 5.4 times higher than in static culture at 50,000 cells/ml, and 3.8 times higher at 150,000 cells/ml.
Key features
-
Plug-and-play: works with standard lab equipment and needs minimal training
-
Automated seeding for reproducible, operator-independent results
-
Modular, transparent design, so you can watch the construct during culture
-
Two versions: Disposable (single-use, for GMP-oriented workflows) and Autoclavable (reusable, cost-effective for academic and process-development labs)
-
Sizes from BioAxFlow4/Small (15–25 ml) to BioAxFlow8/Large (110–180 ml), with custom configurations on request
Validated applications
-
Bone and soft-tissue engineering on 3D scaffolds
-
3D cancer models for oncology research and drug testing
-
Preclinical in vitro constructs as an alternative to animal testing
Key publication: "A Fluid Dynamics-Model System for Advancing Tissue Engineering and Cancer Research Studies: Biological Assessment of the Innovative BioAxFlow Dynamic Culture Bioreactor" (Biomimetics, 2025).
Our track record in European research
Cellex is a partner in several EU-funded projects: OSTEONET and REGENERATION (bone tissue engineering), 3D-CREATOR (bone and oesophageal scaffolds, bioprinting), BLUES (marine invertebrate cell cultures) and GALATEA (bioreactors for human milk research).
What we are looking for at Meet in Italy for Life Sciences
-
Academic groups and research hospitals working on scaffold-based 3D models who want to test BioAxFlow in their own workflows
-
Partners for joint Horizon Europe and national grant applications in tissue engineering, regenerative medicine and in vitro models
-
Distributors and commercial partners for life-science lab equipment in Europe and beyond
-
CROs and biotech companies building 3D in vitro models for preclinical testing
We are based in Rome and happy to meet in person during the event, or to arrange a follow-up visit or demo.
