Cellex S.r.l. is an innovative SME based in Rome, Italy, with a team of twelve people, which designs, patents, manufactures and markets bioreactors for advanced cell culture. Its core competence is fluid-dynamic design: oxygen and solute transport, flow uniformity. Two patented platforms derive from it: BioAxFlow, for dynamic three-dimensional culture on scaffolds, and SUSPENCE, for suspension culture without impellers or moving parts in contact with the culture, both in single-use and autoclavable configurations. Alongside device manufacturing, Cellex provides bioprocess design, feasibility studies, and design and installation of lab- and pilot-scale production lines, combining process engineering with techno-economic assessment. Facilities in Rome comprise a 40 m2 R&D laboratory for bench tests, material evaluation and fluid-dynamic trials, a 100 m2 production and assembly site, and a particle image velocimetry system. Biological validation is carried out with academic partners under co-authorship. The company takes part in five European and national research programmes, including the Horizon Europe project BLUES on bioprocesses for metabolite production from marine invertebrate cell lines. Sites in Rome (Italy) and Wageningen (the Netherlands).
