About
We offer an industrial end-user and demonstrator role to accelerate Innovative Advanced Materials (IAM)-enabled sensing components from laboratory concepts to TRL 5–6 through validation in industrially relevant liquid environments (high organic load, variable pH, high salinity, fouling-prone streams). We are particularly aligned with Area A (multifunctional surfaces sensing pH/moisture/microbiological or chemical pollutants in gases/liquids) and Area B (sensor demonstrators integrated into IoT-ready systems), with a strong focus on environmental monitoring and reliability under real operating constraints.
What we can contribute (work packages / tasks)

Requirements & use cases: specification of sensing needs (limits of detection, selectivity, response time, drift, cleaning compatibility), installation constraints, and operational KPIs for water/wastewater assets.

Demonstration sites and field validation: access to operational treatment plants and pilot units for controlled trials (side-stream and in-line), including challenging matrices (industrial effluents, biological reactors, membrane systems, brines). (Supports the topic requirement for demonstration in an industrially relevant environment.)

System integration: integration into existing OT/IT stacks (PLC/SCADA, gateways, historian time-series databases), edge processing, and data QA/QC for sensor performance tracking.

Data analytics & digital twins: development of data-driven/hybrid models for signal interpretation, sensor drift detection, calibration transfer, and decision-support (e.g., early warning for pollutants, process upsets, and fouling risk).

Safe-and-sustainable-by-design & circularity input: operational feedback on cleaning chemicals, durability, maintenance intervals, recyclability constraints, and end-of-life considerations to support uptake by industry/end-users.

Exploitation pathways: realistic routes to adoption in water utilities and industrial operators (OPEX/maintenance impacts, procurement constraints, standardisation needs).

Continuous monitoring experience (UV-Vis/online probes), strong field know-how on sensor robustness, fouling and maintenance regimes, and industrial operations.

Multidisciplinary team spanning process engineering, instrumentation, and data science.
