Linerless Type V hydrogen storage: as-wound simulation and design, open to vessel manufacturers and small-craft integrators

About
What we do. A filament-wound vessel is designed as a smooth shell and manufactured as discrete fibre bands that overlap, leave gaps and build up unevenly through the dome. Standard practice models the first description and builds the second, and the gap between them is paid for in design margin and therefore in carbon fibre. DELTA-MPIS generates the as-wound band layout directly from the parameters a winding machine already uses, so overlaps and gaps carry positions and the analysis can answer where a vessel concentrates stress and where it first ceases to be leak-tight.
Why linerless. Removing the polymer liner moves the sealing function into the laminate, so leak tightness rather than strength governs the design. Leakage depends on whether matrix cracks connect through the thickness, which is a question about the arrangement of features that a homogenised model cannot answer. This is the gap we work on, and it is why we focus on Type V.
What we are offering partners.
- A design study on your storage module at no cost, run against your duty cycle, returning vessel mass, carbon fibre mass, minimum safety factor, and the point in service life and location at which the laminate becomes leak-critical.
- A winding schedule expressed in your machine's own parameters, so any resulting design can be produced on equipment you already own.
- A standards-mapped qualification plan for linerless vessels, stating clause by clause which requirements a design with no liner satisfies and which need an equivalence argument. The composite cylinder standards are written around the presence of a liner, and we intend to publish this document as an open output.
What we are looking for.
- Vessel manufacturers using filament winding, for design collaboration and for validation against real parts.
- Marine integrators and small-craft builders who can supply a module envelope, required hydrogen capacity and an observed duty cycle.
- Test laboratories with a certified universal testing machine and optical microscopy, for wound cylindrical specimen campaigns.
- Other IH-MIE applicants whose fuel cell, refuelling or energy management work is bounded by storage mass, where a lighter module changes what is possible downstream.
Who we are. DELTA-MPIS is an applied engineering SME in Athens working in finite element analysis, composites and digital twins, with prior work on filament-wound pressure vessel optimisation, instrumented winding and correlation of models against physical specimen testing.
