To make the rollout of Hydrogen Refueling Stations (HRS) viable while waiting for the long-term transition of the truck fleet to occur, monetizing HRS hydrogen production through blending into the natural gas network or, when available, into the open-access hydrogen backbone, could provide early revenue streams to HRS owners making the investments viable and facilitating HRS deployment. This would also increase the likelihood that H2 refuelling infrastructure is in place in time to support the shift to fuel cell trucks, helping break the current vicious circle: no HRS, no fuel cell trucks; no fuel cell trucks, no revenue for the HRS owner; no revenue, no investment return; and no investment return, no viable project, even where CAPEX is incentivized.
BOOM is developing an Infrastructure Intelligence Platform that will automate and integrate a GIS-supported database with a Cost Estimation Tool, an Economic Evaluation Tool, and an automatic report-generation capability. The platform is intended to enable rapid initial viability assessments to decide whether Hydrogen Refueling Stations should:
- connect by pipeline either to the future Spanish hydrogen backbone to secure hydrogen supply as a back-up in cases of electrolyzer unavailability or
- evaluate opportunities to blend surplus hydrogen into the existing natural gas TSO network, with value creation linked to monetization of emission certificates.
The platform will also allow Hydrogen Refueling Stations to evaluate whether to oversize their electrolyzers to account for future demand and, in the meantime, while demand builds up, monetize excess hydrogen production by blending it into the existing gas TSO network.
In addition, it will support the evaluation of pipeline connections for future hydrogen demand hubs, such as logistics hubs and ports, helping determine whether these connections are economically viable. By combining spatial, technical, and economic data into a single automated workflow, the platform will significantly reduce the time and effort currently required for early-stage viability studies.
The proposed platform will streamline the assessment process through automation, enabling much faster and more scalable preliminary evaluations. A further key feature will be a self-learning algorithm designed to continuously improve the reliability and accuracy of the platform’s recommendations by learning from previous assessments and outcomes. BOOM is currently working toward the development of a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) pilot by the end of 2026, and plans to advance this pilot into a commercially viable product by the end of 2027. This development will help transform an internal manual capability into a robust digital solution with the potential to support the wider rollout of hydrogen infrastructure in Spain.
