TABULA
Where taste brings people and the region together
TABULA is an emerging, independent cross-border initiative rooted in the Meuse-Rhine Euroregion, where the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany meet. Its ambition is to bring people, places and organisations together through gastronomy, hospitality, regional food culture, craftsmanship, landscapes and a shared sense of identity.
The region has a remarkable diversity of culinary traditions, local producers, cultural landscapes, hospitality businesses and educational institutions. TABULA seeks to connect these existing strengths and create a recognisable regional story that people can experience, contribute to and share.
Our vision
TABULA starts where the character of a region becomes tangible: at the table, in restaurants, hotels and cafés, at local markets, on farms and in encounters with the people who shape the region.
Hospitality and gastronomy provide the starting point. From there, TABULA aims to connect producers, entrepreneurs, food lovers, educational institutions, cultural organisations, tourism partners, public authorities and local communities.
The initiative is inspired by international examples such as Piedmont, the Basque Country and New Nordic Kitchen, where shared values, culinary craftsmanship, knowledge exchange and cooperation have contributed to stronger regional identities.
TABULA does not aim to replace existing initiatives or impose a single identity. Its purpose is to connect and strengthen what already exists, while respecting the diversity of people, languages, traditions and places.
Our ambitions
TABULA aims to contribute to:
-
Stronger cross-border cooperation between businesses, communities, educational institutions and public authorities.
-
Greater recognition of regional gastronomy, craftsmanship, cultural heritage and landscapes.
-
Sustainable tourism and meaningful connections between visitors, residents and local producers.
-
New opportunities for entrepreneurship, knowledge exchange and regional economic development.
-
A stronger sense of regional identity, pride and quality of life.
-
Practical cooperation that connects food culture, landscape, sustainability and community engagement.
Current development
TABULA is currently in its exploratory phase. Initial activities focus on identifying potential partners, testing the concept with stakeholders and developing opportunities for small-scale collaborative projects.
The Meuse-Rhine Euroregion, including Maastricht, Hasselt, Liège, Aachen and Eupen, provides the initial geographical context. The wider ambition is to develop an approach that can inspire cooperation beyond regional and national boundaries.
European cooperation
TABULA is interested in participating in European partnerships and consortia where regional engagement, hospitality, food culture, sustainable tourism and landscape-related initiatives can contribute to broader societal and environmental objectives.
Potential areas of cooperation include community participation in biodiversity and ecosystem restoration, sustainable regional food systems, cultural landscapes, education, responsible tourism and place-based innovation.
