AI-Driven Climate-Resilient and Low-Carbon Building Stock Playbook
Environental Engineer - Senior researcher at Instituto Pedro Nunes
Coimbra, Portugal
About
The Climate-Resilient and Low-Carbon Building Stock Playbook is designed to investigate, systematize, and model real-world cases of resilience and vulnerability in real estate assets exposed to natural disasters and escalating climate pressures. The primary objective is the development of an autonomous, AI-driven digital tool capable of assessing both physical and transition climate risks for any real estate asset, regardless of location. Furthermore, the tool simulates adaptive responses to enhance climate resilience and sustainability throughout the asset's entire life cycle, based on Digital Twin technologies and AI models, as well as LCA/LCC. The tool is envisioned to automatically generate parameterized, auditable action plans tailored to the specific characteristics of each property and aligned with two European reference frameworks: Level(s), as a framework for assessing sustainability and physical risks across the life cycle of buildings, and Carbon Risk in Real Estate Monitoring (CRREM).
Project Objectives
O1. Develop a self-adaptive digital real estate passport integrating regulatory, climate, risk, and sustainability data with full interoperability and traceability.
O2. Implement dynamic, auditable Digital Twins of buildings and their context to support continuous monitoring, compliance, and scenario simulation.
O3. Develop hybrid AI models for predictive and adaptive assessment of physical and transition climate risks with proactive mitigation insights.
O4. Build a dynamic materials and systems library enabling AI-driven vulnerability, resilience, and sustainability assessment of real estate assets.
This is an idea that builds on the evolution of a recently submitted Portuguese project and it is therefore already at a mature stage. We are advancing it in close collaboration with two partners - two IT companies who will implement and explore the Playbook, with clients from Europe up to Asia and US.
We are interested in integrating a consortium who is developing a proposal to one of the following calls:
HORIZON-CL5-2026-02-D4-03: Innovative pathways for low carbon and climate resilient building stock and built environment.
HORIZON-CL5-2026-09-D4-03: Advanced data platforms to integrate whole life carbon in building information tools, assessments, and certification.
We believe it would be an excellent fit for the above-mentioned calls and I’m sure we could make a strong contribution and add significant value.
