Functional Foods for Mental Well-being via Gut Microbiota Modulation
Dean, Faculty of Chemical Technology, Kaunas University of Technology at Kaunas University of Technology - Faculty of Chemical Technology
Kaunas, Lithuania
About
The core idea of the project proposal is to develop functional food solutions that support mental health by targeting the diet–gut microbiome–host health axis. By combining natural bioactive compounds, advanced food technologies (e.g., micro/nano-encapsulation, 3D food printing), and molecular microbiome analysis, the project aims to: (1) identify and define specific food groups and essential macro- and micronutrients that contribute to the prevention of target and emerging mental health disorders; (2) investigate the interplay between diet, gut microbiota, and host mental health, including the specific biomarker identification, using advanced tools like the SHIME® system (Simulator of the Human Intestinal Microbial Ecosystem), alongside digital PCR, and molecular diagnostics; (3) develop tailored functional food prototypes, enriched with natural bioactive compounds (including sustainable sources like edible algae), enabling targeted/controlled delivery and release to the gut; (4) translate scientific findings into actionable communication tools and policy recommendations/guidelines for public health authorities, nutritional professionals, and patients.
