About

The Faculty of Chemical Technology (FCT) conducts advanced research in the synthesis and characterisation of functional materials for sustainability, energy and human health. Key research areas include organic photoconductors for renewable energy, electroactive materials for OLEDs and semiconductors, as well as sustainable materials for environmental clean-up. In health, the FCT focuses on bioactive compounds, biomedical materials, advanced drug delivery systems, alternative proteins and circular economy strategies for food security and resource efficiency. Synthetic biology and metabolic engineering are also being explored to produce high-value biomaterials and microbial solutions for sustainable health innovation.

FCT is a leader in analytical chemistry with modern facilities (NMR, LC-MS/MS, GC-MS/MS, ICP-MS, FTIR, Raman, microscopy) for the accurate detection of contaminants and bioactive compounds. The Faculty is active in research on micro/nanoplastics (MNPs) in particular, developing and standardising analytical methods, reference materials and carrying out detailed assessments of the effects of MNPs, their interactions with additional contaminants and their impact on human health and the microbiome. This includes working closely with policy makers and regulators to support evidence-based decision making.

Our interests include optimizing and standardizing analytical methods and reference materials for detecting micro/nanoplastics (MNPs) in environmental and biological samples. Our research aims to understand exposure pathways, interactions with pollutants and biological agents, and the health impacts of MNPs, including their metabolism and degradation in the human body and microbiome. We also engage with policymakers to support the practical application of research findings.
