About
The idea of using art as a therapeutic method is gaining more and more attention from mental health practitioners. Therapies that include art are becoming more and more popular among mental health units. Photography can positively affect mental health. It applies to people with mental health disabilities, intellectual disabilities, adolescents and older adults. It was an effective way to deal with distress during the COVID-19 pandemic. Art is one way to promote social inclusion, which means that it can be used to work with people from marginalised groups.
The participatory photography can be used in a project based on the Photovoice methodology. At its essence, Photovoice involves asking participants to reflect on a topic, identify questions to answer with their cameras, take photos that illustrate their concerns and strengths, discuss their photos, write captions for them, identify emerging themes, and advocate for change through exhibits and other forms of outreach. Interactive displays allow others to experience the project photographers' views and add their comments, adding even more depth to the dialogue.
