Proof of concept for offshore hydrogen production. Electrolysis will take place on a maneuverable and selfinstalling jack-up platform. The gained know-how will be implemented to the large-scale offshore projects and subsequently reducing cost of hydrogen.

Pre-commercial project (300 MW)

In early 2023, Germany's Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) rolled out the Site Development Plan (FEP), a strategic document that outlines legal targets for offshore wind energy expansion using spatial planning in the North and Baltic Seas.

The German FEP designates specific areas for wind energy development and provides details on the volume and allocation process for these areas. Additionally, it recognizes ”other energy generation areas“ for alternative energy generation installations that can be built without any need to grid connection. Energy generated in these zones, like electricity from hydropower, is typically consumed right at the source.

The only currently active zone is referred to as SEN-1 with roughly 101.61 km² within the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of the North Sea and divided into 3 areas of approximately the same size (300 MW).

Expansion possibility

At the same time NORTHSEA HYDROGEN promotes the global dedication of OWF-areas for green hydrogen production and plans to take part in respective tenders. At the moment 10 GW of offshore electrolysis is required in Germany alone.
