About
Living Lab as a Service (LLaaS) is an impact-oriented service developed by Science for Change (SFC) that enables organizations, territories and communities to activate Living Lab processes without having to build a permanent infrastructure from scratch. LLaaS provides the methodology, tools and expertise needed to design, implement and evaluate participatory innovation processes adapted to different challenges and contexts.
Based on Living Lab principles, LLaaS creates real-world environments where solutions can be co-designed, tested, improved and validated through collaboration between citizens, researchers, public authorities, companies and civil society organizations. The approach follows a multi-actor and quadruple helix model, ensuring that diverse forms of knowledge, expertise and lived experiences contribute to the development of more relevant and sustainable solutions.
LLaaS combines Living Lab methodologies with citizen science, enabling citizens and stakeholders to actively participate not only in the co-creation process but also in the generation of evidence and data to understand challenges, monitor progress and assess impact. Through participatory methods, SFC supports organizations in transforming research and innovation processes into more inclusive, transparent and impactful experiences.
The service is designed for two main profiles: organizations with challenges that want to engage communities and validate solutions in real contexts, and organizations with innovative solutions that need to test, adapt and demonstrate their value with end users. SFC acts as a methodological partner, connecting challenges with relevant stakeholders and solutions while facilitating the experimentation and learning process.
The LLaaS methodology includes stakeholder mapping and engagement, participatory diagnosis, co-design workshops, citizen science activities, implementation support, data collection, monitoring and impact assessment. A key objective is to move beyond participation by generating measurable evidence of change and enabling the continuous improvement and reconfiguration of project outputs based on real-world feedback.
Supported by SFC’s interdisciplinary team with expertise in sustainability, health, circular economy, society, policy, communication and participatory research, LLaaS provides a flexible framework to support European projects, public initiatives, research programmes and innovation ecosystems seeking to maximize their societal impact.
