POLNORIS project idea: smart gas sensing and FPGA-based monitoring for biogas plants

Research and Teaching Assistant Professor at Poznan University of Technology

Poznan, Poland

About

PROJECT IDEA

I am seeking partners to jointly develop a POLNORIS proposal on smart gas sensing and monitoring systems for biogas plants, contributing to the European green transition.

The proposed research would investigate how frequency-output gas sensors, FPGA-based multichannel acquisition and data analysis can improve the reliability and usefulness of measurements under variable operating conditions.

The concept is open for discussion and adaptation to partners’ expertise, research needs and access to experimental facilities.

POTENTIAL RESEARCH OBJECTIVES

• Characterise sensor performance, cross-sensitivity, drift and environmental influences;
• Develop and evaluate multichannel FPGA-based measurement and data acquisition methods;
• Investigate calibration, compensation and anomaly detection using sensor data;
• Integrate sensing hardware with monitoring software;
• Validate a prototype against reference instruments in laboratory conditions and, subject to partner access, at a biogas installation.

Expected outcomes could include a validated prototype, measurement datasets, calibration and processing methods, and evidence of performance against agreed benchmarks.

BACKGROUND AND POTENTIAL CONTRIBUTION

I am an Assistant Professor at the Institute of Computing, Poznan University of Technology, Poland. My research includes sensor systems, frequency measurement, FPGA-based processing, embedded systems and Python-based data analysis.

I participated in preparing and submitting a LUKE proposal on sensing technologies for biogas installations with partners from Ukraine and Finland.

The proposed project would build on this research background while defining new research questions and validation tasks beyond the published work.

PARTNERS SOUGHT

• Research organisations from Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein with expertise in gas sensing, metrology, bioenergy or process monitoring;
• Biogas operators or industrial partners able to contribute use cases, operational requirements and access to testing facilities;
• Polish teams preparing a related POLNORIS proposal and seeking complementary sensing and embedded systems expertise.
