About

SINTEF CEPE — CO2 Capture Research Group (Trondheim, Norway)
Seeking Polish partners for the POLNORIS 2026 call (EEA/Norway Grants)

Who we are
SINTEF is Europe's largest independent research institute. Our CO2 Process Engineering (CEPE) group specialises in post-combustion CO2 capture with ~30 researchers and one of the world's most advanced capture pilot facilities — the Tiller CO2 Lab (full-height absorber/desorber, 800 kg CO2/day, 100,000+ operational hours, 60+ experimental campaigns). We also develop CO2SIM, our in-house rate-based process simulator and digital twin, and hold deep expertise in advanced process control (NMPC), amine emission monitoring (ACEMS/FTIR), membrane contactors, and novel solvents (CESAR1/AMP+PZ).

What we are looking for
A Polish research institute or university to act as Project Promoter (lead applicant) in a POLNORIS consortium. We are particularly interested in groups with:

  • Amine scrubbing or solvent research capabilities

  • Access to industrial CO2 point sources (cement, steel, lime, chemicals)

  • Experience in CO2 capture pilot plant operation or process scale-up

Proposed collaboration topics (green transformation priority area)

  1. Post-combustion capture for Polish industry — scale-up and digital twin (preferred)
Pilot-scale validation of optimised amine processes for cement or steel flue gas, combined with CO2SIM digital twin development and NMPC control integration. Target: bridge the gap between lab/pilot and industrial deployment.

  2. Novel solvents and emission control for hard-to-abate sectors
Development and benchmarking of next-generation solvents, with integrated amine emission monitoring — directly relevant to Polish industrial operators facing ETS and regulatory pressure.

  3. CO2 capture + utilisation (CCU) chain
Linking post-combustion capture with downstream CO2 utilisation (e.g. methanation, mineralisation) — suitable for a consortium combining a capture specialist with a P2X/CCU-focused Polish partner.
