Strengthening Neighbourhood Economies Through Everyday Anchors

Cities increasingly face decisions about the relocation, downsizing, transformation or closure of important facilities. While the impact on the individual site is often assessed, the wider consequences for neighbourhood economies, accessibility, mobility and everyday life are rarely understood.

ANCHOR+ introduces the concept of everyday anchors: facilities or locations that organise significant shares of daily trips, visitor flows and local activities. These may include commercial facilities, public services, healthcare facilities, mobility hubs, employment clusters or multifunctional service centres.

The project addresses two key questions:

1. Which facilities function as critical everyday anchors within local access systems?

2. What happens when these anchors relocate, disappear, shrink or change function?

Building on existing location intelligence, spending-flow models and urban analysis tools, ANCHOR+ will develop a methodology that helps local governments:

• identify critical everyday anchors;

• understand their role within neighbourhood economies;

• assess economic, spatial and social impacts;

• evaluate future scenarios;

• support evidence-based policy decisions.

The project combines expertise in:

• local economic development;

• retail and service provision;

• accessibility and mobility;

• governance and policy;

• spatial and data-driven analysis.

We are looking for:

• municipalities with anchor-transition cases;

• universities and research institutes;

• retail, data and location-intelligence companies;

• mobility and accessibility experts;

• civil-society organisations;

• local economic development stakeholders.

The project contributes directly to DUT Topic 3 by helping cities understand, strengthen and future-proof local everyday offers and neighbourhood economies through better management of anchor transitions.
