Mobility transitions across sectors

Urban mobility transitions often focus primarily on passenger transport, while freight and service flows are essential to the functioning of cities. BISCI is interested in developing projects that bring these two perspectives together and investigate how urban freight can be integrated into broader mobility strategies.

We can contribute expertise in supply chain management, last-mile logistics, digitalisation, sustainability and stakeholder collaboration. Our research includes work on the viability of automation, robotisation and intelligent systems in last-mile delivery, as well as the role of complexity and uncertainty in robotic last-mile solutions. These insights can support the development and evaluation of new urban logistics concepts.

Potential cooperation could address urban consolidation centres, micro-hubs, shared logistics infrastructure, cargo bikes, autonomous delivery, dynamic routing, delivery time windows or integrated mobility platforms. We are particularly interested in solutions that consider the interaction between freight, passenger mobility, public space and local economic activity.

BISCI can support the mapping and analysis of urban supply and logistics flows, business-model development, stakeholder engagement and the evaluation of environmental, economic and societal impacts. We are interested in combining modelling and research with real-world experimentation in cities and neighbourhoods.

Our recent work on green innovation and modal shift in ports also demonstrates our broader interest in sustainable transport systems, flow optimisation and digital transformation.

We are looking for cities, municipalities, logistics operators, retailers, mobility providers, technology companies and academic partners interested in co-developing and testing integrated urban mobility and freight solutions.
