Sustainable energy systems and integrated technologies

Scientific Director Brightlands Institute for Supply Chain Innovation at University of Maastricht

Maastricht, Netherlands

About

BISCI is interested in exploring the relationship between energy transition, logistics and supply-chain systems within sustainable urban districts. While Positive Energy Districts primarily focus on energy production and consumption, their performance is also influenced by mobility, logistics, infrastructure and the activities of businesses and residents.

BISCI can contribute expertise in supply-chain management, digitalisation, sustainability, resilience and stakeholder collaboration. Our recent research on green innovation in ports addresses clean energy production and supply, sustainable infrastructure, flow optimisation and digital transformation. In addition, recent BISCI research has investigated the transition of European ports towards carbon-neutral energy and the role of stakeholders in adopting carbon-neutral energy technologies.

We see opportunities to transfer these perspectives to urban districts by examining how energy systems interact with logistics, mobility and local economic activity. Potential research could explore flexible energy use by logistics facilities, charging infrastructure for electric delivery vehicles, energy-aware routing, local energy communities, shared infrastructure or digital platforms that coordinate energy and transport demand.

A key research question is how different stakeholders can coordinate their decisions so that energy flexibility and sustainability benefits are achieved across the wider urban system rather than within individual buildings or organisations.

BISCI can contribute stakeholder analysis, supply-chain and logistics modelling, business-model development, sustainability assessment and evaluation of pilot projects. We are particularly interested in multidisciplinary consortia combining energy expertise with urban planning, mobility, digital technologies and social sciences.

We are looking for cities, energy providers, technology companies, housing and infrastructure partners, mobility operators and research organisations interested in developing integrated, real-world solutions for sustainable and flexible urban districts.
