Monitoring System for Multimodal Mobility Hubs
About
KielRegion has been coordinating the development of multimodal mobility hubs for several years, aiming to promote sustainable urban mobility across the region. These hubs combine various transport modes – such as public transport, cycling, and shared mobility – into accessible and user-friendly stations. However, there is currently no systematic way to measure how these stations are being used by the public.
To address this gap, KielRegion is developing a project idea that builds on existing infrastructure and travel experience: equipping selected mobility hubs with a monitoring system that collects anonymized usage data. This system will use sensors and cameras to detect patterns of use and modal shifts – such as transitions from bike to bus or from car-sharing to train. The goal is to better understand how people interact with multimodal infrastructure and to identify barriers and opportunities for improving urban mobility.
We are looking for European partners who are interested in co-developing and testing such monitoring systems, sharing best practices, and exploring ethical and legal frameworks for data collection in public spaces. We are particularly interested in collaboration with cities or regions that have implemented similar mobility hubs or are planning to do so, as well as with research institutions and technology providers working on mobility data analytics.
With this project we aim to take the next steps toward smarter, more responsive multimodal mobility systems that are grounded in real user behavior and experience.
