Next steps for multimodal urban mobility, building on the travel experience

Fernando Fonseca

About

Walking is the backbone of truly multimodal urban mobility, shaping the way people experience and connect with their cities. By prioritizing pedestrian accessibility and comfort, cities can enhance the travel experience, support seamless connections to other sustainable modes, and take meaningful steps toward more inclusive and climate-neutral urban environments. We are particularly interested in contributing to the 15-minute city Transition Pathway Next steps for multimodal urban mobility, building on the travel experience.

My research team (CTAC-UMinho) brings strong expertise in sustainable and active mobility. We have coordinated European research on active mobility, including the Smart Pedestrian Net project, where I was actively involved as a post-doctoral researcher. We also maintain strong collaborations with Portuguese municipalities, facilitating the integration of research outcomes into real urban contexts.

We are interested in contributing to consortiums focusing on:

- Holistic approaches and strategic visions to promote active urban mobility;

- Urban planning policies and initiatives for walking, cycling, and public transport;

- Community engagement in sustainable mobility transitions;

- Fifteen-minute cities and local living;

-Greener streets and sustainable mobility.

In addition to sustainable mobility, we are also open to collaborating under CUE Topic 1: Resilient green and social infrastructure, particularly in projects focused on Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) for climate mitigation and adaptation. Our team has skills and previous experience in developing and submitting proposals on the use of NBS as tools to address key urban challenges, including urban heat, air pollution, and noise. We are especially interested in exploring how NBS can support cities in mitigating and adapting to climate change, while simultaneously enhancing wellbeing and contributing to climate neutrality

We are open to joining a consortium as research partners, offering expertise in active mobility (particularly walking) and/or NBS, and if needed, facilitating connections with a Portuguese municipality to support local implementation.
