Strengthening democratic resilience through responsible AI and cross-border disinformation monitoring

About

AI4Truth addresses the urgent challenge of disinformation in Europe by combining responsible AI development, media literacy, and cross-border monitoring strategies. Building on the proven methods of the European Digital Media Observatory (BENEDMO) and the MediaNumeric, the project empowers journalists, civil society actors, and researchers with practical tools to detect, contextualise, and counter harmful content—while upholding the fundamental right to freedom of expression.

Through multilingual pilots in diverse media environments, AI4Truth tests AI-assisted fact-checking tools and workflows for identifying manipulation in audiovisual and online media. The project ensures these tools are explainable, transparent, and co-created with newsrooms and civil society watchdogs. It also supports democratic resilience through community-driven campaigns and training programmes on AI and media ethics, with a strong focus on youth, minority voices, and local media actors.

By linking technological innovation with ethical frameworks and civic engagement, AI4Truth contributes to a European public sphere that is more resilient to manipulation—without compromising pluralism, journalistic independence, or fundamental rights.
