Access to audiovisual heritage for reuse, research and social impact
About
This project aims to demonstrate how the European Collaborative Cloud for Cultural Heritage (ECCCH) can significantly enhance access to, engagement with, and reuse of complex cultural heritage formats — with a primary focus on audiovisual materials. These materials, which include film, television, sound recordings, and born-digital media, are vital records of Europe’s diverse histories, yet remain underutilised due to their technical complexity, rights restrictions, and lack of scalable tools for interaction and interpretation.
The project engages a wide network of cultural heritage institutions, researchers, and creative professionals from at least five European countries to implement ambitious, real-world use cases that demonstrate the ECCCH’s potential. These use cases explore how audiovisual heritage can be made more accessible, discoverable, and reusable through collaborative tools, immersive experiences, semantic enrichment, and cross-border workflows.
The activities address core needs across the Cluster 2 agenda, including:
-
Inclusive access to cultural content through multilingual, participatory interfaces
-
Cross-sectoral collaboration between memory institutions, researchers, and the creative industries
-
New models of cultural co-creation and user engagement
-
Interoperability and data continuity across cloud infrastructures and data spaces
-
Support for research and innovation in digital cultural heritage and memory politics
The project provides critical input into the refinement of the ECCCH, contributing tested improvements to user tools, documentation, and workflows, with all outputs compliant with ECCCH development standards. All software will be released as open source, and data outputs will adhere to FAIR principles.
By documenting and communicating the tested use cases and resulting innovations, the project not only validates the ECCCH platform but also strengthens the ecosystem around it — helping to build a shared European infrastructure for cultural knowledge creation, preservation, and reuse.
