Special Protective Coating for Fast-Charging Li-ion Battery Anodes

About

The Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAS) offers a battery-anode surface modification technology that applies a special thin layer (ZnO) by atomic layer deposition (ALD) to improve performance during fast charging and discharging. This layer limits excessive growth of the SEI/passivation layer at the anode–electrolyte interface, helping maintain capacity under intensive cycling.

Key benefits for industry:

  • Longer service life of Li-ion batteries under fast charge/discharge

  • Reduced capacity drop observed in e-mobility use cases (e.g., EV batteries)

  • Artificial protective ZnO film that limits SEI overgrowth

Application areas: energy storage, especially automotive and electromobility (cars, bicycles, scooters), enabling fast and efficient charging while preserving total capacity.

Development & IP: functionality verified in laboratory conditions; priority and PCT patent application (SK, PCT). We are looking for an industrial partner for licensing or sale of the technology.

Commercialization is supported by the Technology Transfer Office of SAS, which can facilitate the licensing/sale process, contracting, and communication with the IP-holding SAS organization.
