Geo-Analytics / Geo-correlation analyses between diseases vs environmental factors; including utilizing satellite earth observation environmental sensors

Professor at Geographic Analytics Research Group @ Fulda University of Applied Sciences

Fulda, Germany

About

The Geo-Analytics Research Group at Fulda University of Applied Sciences, led by Prof. Dr. Jozo Acksteiner, builds geo analytics-based decision systems for public health and supply chain management environments.

Geo-Correlations

Compared to traditional medical studies, geo-correlations include the component of "where", i.e. the geo-coordinate of the patient and the pollutant data. With this, a higher granularity of analysis compared to traditional studies can be achieved.

The team established a basic prototype showcase for skin cancer vs. sun radition. But of course, the methodology can be applied to multiple cancer types and beyond.

E.g. the team is analyzing geo-correlations of pneumonia severity vs air-pollutants in collaboration with Uniklinik Marburg. The air pollutants are being measured via earth observation (satellite) based sensors such as Sentinel-5p.

Public health references

During corona, for the corona management team of the state of Hesse (Germany) the research group of Prof. Acksteiner in collaboration with Uniklinik Frankfurt, University of Dresden and the Hesse Social Ministry built an operative resource management system for ventilator capacities / patient distribution https://www.hs-fulda.de/en/business/research-and-transfer/fight-covid-19-project

A similar system was later rewarded the BMFTR StiPS Social Innovation first price award https://www.hs-fulda.de/en/newsroom/message-details/detail/informatik-student-gewinnt-innovationspreis

A startup that was created with team members of the research group, received multiple innovation awards such as ESA (European Space Agency) BIC Hessen, Step USA and Push!Hessen.
