About

The Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences offers high-quality academic experience, combining innovative research with a strong commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration. We contribute to the university’s academic excellence by preparing knowledgeable and skilled professionals in the field of basic medical sciences, with a particular focus on pharmaceuticals.

We're offering deep scientific expertise in research area of Genetic and Epigenetic Biomarkers:

• Discovery and characterization of molecular markers for the prevention, progression, and treatment of human and animal diseases.

• Development of machine learning models for predicting autoimmune and neurodegenerative disease progression.

• Applications in practical genomics for animal and plant breeding, as well as personalized veterinary medicine.

Besides the deep scientific expertise in genetic and epigenetic Biomarkers, the head of department Tenured Professor, Dr. biol. Una Riekstiņa is deeply passionate about advancing research in precision medicine. Her work focuses on:

  • Cell-based therapeutics – Exploring induced pluripotent stem cells for tissue and organ regeneration, as well as investigating the pathogenesis of rare diseases.

  • Personalized medicine – Utilizing organ-on-a-chip technology to screen medicinal substances for tailored treatments.
