About
The Albarqouni Lab – Computational Medical Imaging Research is based at the Clinic for Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology of the University Hospital Bonn (UKB) and the University of Bonn, Germany, and is led by Prof. Dr. Shadi Albarqouni. We develop trustworthy, privacy-preserving, and affordable AI for medical imaging, from methods to clinical validation.
What we offer to consortia:
-
Federated learning across hospitals. Training and validating AI on distributed clinical data without moving it, in line with the European Health Data Space. We are the scientific lead of Germany’s Open Medical Inference (OMI) network of the Medical Informatics Initiative.
-
Medical foundation and vision–language models for radiology (MRI, CT, X-ray), digital pathology and ophthalmology, adapted to new hospitals, devices and populations.
-
Trustworthy-AI evaluation. Multi-centre validation, robustness, uncertainty, fairness and bias auditing. We co-authored the international FUTURE-AI guideline (BMJ 2025).
-
Affordable AI for point-of-care and low-resource settings, such as portable ultrasound and low-field MRI.
-
Training and capacity building. Summer and autumn schools and researcher exchanges that have trained 250+ researchers and students from 20+ countries, with partners in the Middle East, Africa and Ukraine.
Track record: 160+ peer-reviewed papers (20,000+ citations); EU IMI project BigPicture; DFG, BMFTR, DAAD and NRW-funded projects; industry projects with Siemens Healthineers, Roche, Carl Zeiss and deepc.
Infrastructure: a GPU server with 8× NVIDIA A100, the federated OMI network across 16 German sites, clinical imaging and digital pathology at UKB, and clinical partners across UKB.
Roles we take: work-package leader (AI / federated learning), technical partner, evaluation partner, training partner. We participate through the University Hospital Bonn or the University of Bonn.
