Full Professor at Biomedical Research Institute of Málaga
Málaga, Spain
About
Ismael Navas Delgado is a Full Professor of Computer Science at the University of Málaga (UMA), Spain, and a researcher at the Institute of Software Technologies and Engineering (ITIS) and the Biomedical Research Institute of Málaga (IBIMA). He is a member of the KHAOS Research Group. He holds a PhD in Computer Engineering and a Master's degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology, bringing together expertise in computer science and biomedical research.
His work focuses on Artificial Intelligence (AI), Knowledge Engineering, Semantic Technologies and Data Science, with applications in healthcare, personalised medicine and clinical decision support. He has worked on health-related research projects in collaboration with clinical and biomedical teams, including researchers in Internal Medicine, addressing the integration and analysis of complex clinical information and its translation into useful tools for healthcare professionals.
Key expertise:
-
Trustworthy and Explainable AI (XAI), machine learning and Large Language Models (LLMs) for healthcare.
-
Clinical Natural Language Processing (NLP): extraction of medical information from unstructured Electronic Health Records (EHRs), clinical entity recognition and integration with structured patient data.
-
Knowledge Graphs, biomedical ontologies, Linked Data, semantic interoperability and knowledge-based reasoning.
-
AI-enabled clinical decision support, with an interest in multimorbidity, polypharmacy, medication safety and personalised treatment.
-
FAIR health data management, integration of heterogeneous biomedical datasets and secondary use of health data.
-
European Data Spaces, federated data architectures and scalable infrastructures for secure, interoperable data sharing.
He has participated in more than 15 national and regional research projects, including projects as Co-Principal Investigator, as well as European research collaborations and over 10 knowledge-transfer contracts with industry and public institutions. His scientific output includes over 100 contributions, and he has supervised four completed PhD theses. He is also involved in ÁGORA Datalab at ITIS, an initiative supporting data engineering, semantic interoperability and data-space innovation.
Contribution to Horizon Europe Consortia
For Horizon Europe Cluster Health, he offers the capacity to lead or contribute to technical work packages on AI development, clinical NLP, knowledge integration, FAIR data management, semantic interoperability and explainable clinical decision support.
His dual affiliation with ITIS and IBIMA supports collaboration across AI researchers, biomedical scientists and clinicians, from technology design to clinically relevant evaluation.
He is interested in joining consortia working on trustworthy AI for health, personalised medicine, multimorbidity, medication safety, clinical decision support and health-data reuse.
He welcomes collaboration with hospitals, research organisations, universities, technology providers and proposal coordinators seeking an experienced partner in AI and biomedical data integration.
