About
Research expertise
Dr. Margarita Torrente Torné and her research team investigate cognitive ageing, neurodegenerative disorders, and the environmental and biological determinants of brain health, integrating clinical neuropsychology with research on gut microbiota, environmental exposures and lifestyle factors.
Their expertise includes neuropsychological, neuropsychiatric and functional assessment, early cognitive decline, cognitive reserve, emotional and behavioral symptoms, and the clinical characterization of individuals across the cognitive impairment spectrum, from subjective cognitive decline and mild cognitive impairment to Alzheimer's disease and Lewy body-related dementias.
Their research also explores associations between environmental contaminants, particularly metals, gut microbiota composition and cognitive functioning. Recent publications address these relationships, as well as the validation of neuropsychological and functional assessment instruments.
Research projects and European experience
Dr Torrente was Principal Investigator of DEM-BIOTA (2020–2025) and currently leads MIND-Omics (2026–2030), two nationally funded projects investigating cognitive impairment and its relationships with gut microbiota, lifestyle and biological or environmental factors. MIND-Omics focuses on early cognitive vulnerability and includes a planned cohort of 115 participants.
She has participated in the European projects EUROMIX, SPRINT and PARC as a member of LTSM/TECNATOX, and has experience in multicenter clinical research involving standardized neuropsychological assessment.
Potential contribution to European consortia
Dr Torrente and her team are interested in contributing to multidisciplinary European projects addressing environmental health, cognitive ageing, brain health, neurodegeneration and prevention.
Potential contributions include neuropsychological and clinical phenotyping; evaluation of cognitive, neuropsychiatric and functional outcomes associated with environmental and lifestyle-related factors; investigation of cognitive vulnerability and resilience; and clinical interpretation and collaborative analysis of neuropsychological, biological and microbiota-related data.
Their contribution would primarily focus on human cognitive health and the clinical relevance of environmental and biological determinants of cognitive ageing.
