HORIZON-HLTH-2027-01-ENVHLTH-02: Integrating climate-related exposures into the human exposome and characterising its changes in response to climate change

Researcher at NOVA University Lisbon - Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine

Lisbon, Portugal

About

The Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine at NOVA University Lisbon (IHMT-NOVA) seeks a consortium coordinator and partners for HORIZON-HLTH-2027-01-ENVHLTH-02.

Who we are and our team

IHMT-NOVA integrates research in public health, medical parasitology, medical microbiology and clinical tropical medicine, connecting biomedical investigation with population health and health systems research.

Our multidisciplinary expertise spans epidemiology, biostatistics, infectious and vector-borne diseases, host–parasite interactions, laboratory diagnosis, migration health and policy evaluation. Our team includes senior researchers and doctoral candidates, with scientific leadership experienced in WHO consultancy, EDCTP scientific advisory activities and EU-funded project leadership. Long-standing collaborations in Portugal, Brazil and Portuguese-speaking African countries support international research and capacity building.

Our proposed contribution

We aim to connect these research areas with an exposome framework through:

  • Public health: integrating climatic, environmental, socioeconomic and health data to investigate exposure–health associations and inequalities, including sex- and gender-related vulnerability.

  • Parasitology and microbiology: investigating how climate-related environmental changes influence exposure to parasites, vectors and microbial pathogens, and their interactions with other health determinants.

  • Clinical tropical medicine: linking exposure patterns to clinical outcomes, particularly in populations affected by tropical diseases, migration and socioeconomic vulnerability.

  • Policy and capacity building: translating findings into prevention strategies, health policy and strengthened research capacity.

Partners sought

We seek to develop collaborative research that builds on IHMT-NOVA’s ongoing activities and examines how climate-driven changes in combined exposures affect biological processes, disease risk and population health.
