About

We are a specialised International Health Unit within the public healthcare system of Catalonia, working in close collaboration with the Infectious Diseases Service of Hospital Universitari Germans Trias i Pujol and maintaining a long-standing collaborative relationship with the research laboratories of IrsiCaixa.

Our unit provides comprehensive pre-travel and post-travel care, diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of imported infectious diseases, as well as structured screening programmes for vulnerable and at-risk populations. We act as a transversal consultation service, supporting both primary care physicians and hospital-based clinicians through an interconnected care model that facilitates early diagnosis, referral and continuity of care.

Our clinical expertise includes tuberculosis, arboviral infections, strongyloidiasis, geohelminth infections, Chagas disease and other imported or neglected tropical diseases. We also support screening and prevention strategies for migrants, returning travellers, local populations with exposure risk, and immunocompromised patients, in close coordination with primary care, hospital services and public health structures.

The unit serves a population area of approximately 1.3 million inhabitants, with a high annual clinical workload, including around 13,000 travellers attended and over 1,000 screenings and first consultations for imported infectious diseases. This setting enables access to real-world clinical data, diverse patient populations and practical experience in the implementation of integrated screening and care pathways.

We are interested in participating in Horizon Europe Cluster Health projects focused on infectious diseases, global health, migrant and traveller health, disease prevention and screening strategies, health inequalities, and the health impacts of climate change, including the emergence and spread of climate-sensitive infectious diseases and innovative adaptation and prevention strategies. We seek collaboration with hospitals, research organisations, public health authorities, SMEs and international partners, contributing as a clinical partner, pilot site, data provider or work package contributor.
