SSH to transform European health in a human & sustainable way.

Research Valorisation Manager at IMEC-SMIT, Vrije Universiteit Brussel

About

Transforming European health through digital and AI innovation faces three critical challenges: trust, meaningful human oversight, and contextual alignment. Without these, solutions risk bias, low adoption, and governance gaps.

As a research centre, SMIT (VUB) we tackles these challenges with SSH expertise embedded in health technology development. For trust, we design frameworks for transparency, fairness, bias mitigation, safety, and GDPR-compliant data flows, supported by participatory co-design. For human oversight, we develop control mechanisms, accountability frameworks, and workflow integration to ensure clinician override and governance in care pathways. For context, we apply implementation science to achieve scalability, equity, and ecosystem fit (EHDS, EOSC), while addressing climate resilience and sustainability.

Our interdisciplinary team delivers actionable methodologies for trustworthy AI, explainable clinical decision support, and scalable interventions that reduce health inequalities.

This approach aligns with Horizon Europe Cluster 1 objectives and supports calls such as:
