Mapping of Clinical Research Sites in Africa (MAP AFRICA)

Founder and Managing Director at BioPartners Africa

Pretoria, South Africa

About

BioPartners Africa seeks collaborative partnerships for the development of an innovative digital platform to map clinical research sites across Africa.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

The project provides comprehensive insight into the following:

  • research center physical location, contact information and local regulatory compliance status,

  • details on center ownership and collaborative partners,

  • detailed insight into site infrastructure and capabilities,

  • details on historical performance and experience,

  • operational readiness,

  • site functionality and quality and system bottlenecks

  • approval pathways specific to each trial center incl. contact information for regulators,

THE PROBLEM

  • information on trial centers/ research centers in Africa is often fragmented and, where available, may be outdated or inaccurate.

  • obtaining accurate, updated data on trial sites often requires requires physical contact with trial sites, which involves travel and additional costs for sponsors and funders.

  • CROs often rely on once-off feasibility exercises using internal checklists that do not fully assess staff capacity and do not consider overall site functionality, and in many cases result in inaccurate information, insufficiently detailed insights and exposes sponsors and funders to high impact risks such as unnecessary costs and extended study timelines.

THE OPPORTUNITY

  • development of a digital platform serving as a single, structured resource on research capacity in Africa, offering comprehensive information, and updated on a quarterly basis.

  • an opportunity to integrate site-level research capacity with insights into healthcare delivery, referral pathways, and population characteristics, the mapping exercise provides a comprehensive understanding on the health ecosystem.

  • this approach enables sponsors, regulators, and funders to better assess feasibility, identify potential risks and opportunities for patient enrolment, allowing full transparency around planning of studies (cost and timelines), and timely trial execution in the event of a disease outbreak or pandemic.
