Techno-economic Modelling and Flexibility Analysis of Decentralized Energy Systems

Matthias Kühnbach

Professor for Decentralized Energy Systems at University of Applied Sciences Kempten

Germany

About

My team offers research expertise in the analysis, modelling and techno-economic evaluation of decentralized energy systems and their integration into the wider energy system.

Areas of contribution include:

• Energy-system modelling and analysis – modelling of distributed generation, demand, storage and flexibility resources, including their interactions at building, company, community and distribution-system level.

• Flexibility and demand-side management – assessment of how flexible loads, batteries, electric vehicles and other flexibility resources can be coordinated and used for different energy-system services.

• Techno-economic evaluation – assessment of investment decisions, operating strategies, business cases and system benefits for decarbonization technologies and integrated energy solutions.

• Energy communities and energy sharing – analysis of prosuming, local energy sharing, community energy concepts and the interaction between consumers, producers, markets and grids.

• Electric mobility and smart charging – modelling and evaluation of EV charging infrastructure, smart charging and vehicle-to-grid/vehicle-to-everything concepts.

• Industrial and commercial energy systems – analysis of decarbonization pathways for SMEs and other distributed energy users, including storage, renewable generation, electrification and flexible operation.

We are particularly interested in joining interdisciplinary and transnational consortia where quantitative energy-system analysis and techno-economic assessment can complement technological development, demonstration or real-world implementation.
