About

The WIP Research Group at TU Berlin specializes in advanced energy system modeling, economic optimization, and policy development to support the integration of renewable energy sources, smart grids, and off-grid solutions. Our expertise spans microgrid integration, off-grid electrification, green hydrogen production, and techno-economic optimization, with a focus on real-world applications across Africa and Europe.

Our Research Focus:
✅ Renewable Energy System Modeling and integration into sustainable energy scenarios.
✅ Smart Stand-Alone Systems for decentralized power solutions.
✅ Multi-Scale Smart Grids for off-grid applications.
✅ Green Hydrogen production and utilization for a low-carbon future.
✅ Techno-Economic Optimization & Policy Advisory for sustainable energy planning.

Advanced Energy System Modeling & Optimization

Our research group has extensive expertise in developing energy system models using cutting-edge tools, including:

⚡ Anymod & Julia-Based Modeling:

  • We have developed multi-scale energy models for smart grid optimization, renewable energy planning, and hydrogen integration using Anymod and Julia.

  • These models support scenario analysis, capacity expansion planning, and energy dispatch optimization in various energy sectors.

Economic & Optimization Models:

  • We apply techno-economic modeling for renewable energy projects, assessing the cost-effectiveness of hybrid energy systems, green hydrogen pathways, and decentralized microgrids.

  • Our team has built linear and nonlinear optimization models to evaluate investment decisions, pricing strategies, and energy market scenarios for off-grid and grid-connected systems.

Policy & Stakeholder Engagement:

  • We integrate economic feasibility analysis and policy modeling into our research, ensuring that energy solutions are not only technically viable but also economically sustainable and aligned with local policy frameworks.

Our Cutting-Edge Projects:

MG-FARM (Microgrid Farms) – LEAP-RE Project (Algeria & Morocco):

  • Developed micro and macro energy models to optimize farm-based microgrids, ensuring cost-efficient and sustainable energy supply.

  • Produced policy recommendations and stakeholder engagement reports for renewable energy adoption.

⚡ Swarm Grids for Rural Electrification (Uganda & Kenya):

  • Designed and implemented swarm grid models for rural communities, leveraging distributed energy resources to enhance off-grid electrification.

  • Conducted economic feasibility assessments to ensure cost-effective solutions for local energy access.

PRIMA Project – Enhancing Water Accountability (Jordan, Turkey, Morocco, Tunisia):

  • Integrated smart energy and water management solutions to address sustainability challenges in water-scarce regions.

  • Developed optimization frameworks to enhance water and energy efficiency in agriculture and industrial applications.

IDEAL4GREEN – MSCA Horizon Europe Project (2025-2028):

  • We are part of IDEAL4GREEN (Building decentralIsed, DistributEd And Local micro-GRids for dEcarbonisation Electrification challeNge), a prestigious EU-funded project advancing next-generation microgrids for decarbonization.

  • Recruiting 15 PhD candidates to develop state-of-the-art modeling and optimization tools for microgrid operation, green hydrogen production, and renewable energy integration.

Looking to Join a Consortium!

We are actively seeking collaboration opportunities under LEAP-SE Cofund and other funding mechanisms. If you are forming a consortium for renewable energy projects, we bring expertise in:

✅ Energy System Modeling (Anymod, Julia, Python, MATLAB, LEAP).
✅ Techno-Economic Optimization for renewable energy investments.
✅ Microgrid Design, Smart Grid Development, and Green Hydrogen Integration.
✅ Policy Advisory & Market Analysis to support energy transitions.
