My group's research include femtosecond and UV laser microfabrication of fibre optical sensor devices like FBGs, distributed fibre optical sensing like OFDR.
We are the Aston Institute of Photonic Technologies (AiPT) at Aston University, dedicated to pioneering advancements in photonics and optical engineering. Our interdisciplinary team combines cutting-edge research with practical applications, aiming to drive innovation across various industries.
AiPT’s success has been built on significant achievements in all aspects of light-based Information and Communication Technology including:
transmission of data via high speed optical fibre systems, 5G wireless links, and optical signal processing;, acquisition of data via bio- and medical photonics and various fibre-optic sensing applications;, device technologies including fibre gratings, nonlinear photonics, femtosecond laser material processing, optoelectronics, THz technology, nano-photonics, and fibre lasers.
We foster collaboration with businesses and academic partners to address real-world challenges and accelerate the development of photonic technologies. As such, AiPT maintains active and fertile collaborations with over 100 industrial companies ranging from start-ups and SMEs through to major corporations such as Airbus, Infinera, Thales, BAE, Nokia Bell Labs, and Huawei. We welcome collaborations in exploring the transformative potential of light and optics in shaping the future of technology.
