Sustainable Mobility for Sports
The workshop explores how sports events can act as a unique accelerator for permanent changes in urban mobility, shifting the focus from simply moving fans to transforming the city. By integrating ticketing with public transport—as demonstrated by EURO 2024, which achieved an 81% sustainable mode share—such events can help normalize greener travel choices. The proposed practical solutions include carpooling with prioritized drop-off zones and dynamic ride-matching, bike-sharing networks with temporary stadium hubs and game-day discounts, and an innovative gamified fan app that rewards sustainable travel through points, live leaderboards, and exclusive prizes. This digital engagement tool aims to encourage friendly competition among fans while making sustainable transport options more attractive. The stadium is therefore presented as a catalyst for lasting infrastructure improvements and behavioural change. Participants will leave with a transferable “Sustainable Sports Mobility Framework” designed to measure both event-day performance and the longer-term impact on residents and visitors, demonstrating how major sporting events can contribute to inclusive, connected, and lasting mobility transformation.
