Automated Mobility Services: From Demonstration to Deployment – Building Europe’s Competitive Advantage

Connected, cooperative and automated mobility (CCAM) is entering a crucial phase: moving from pilots and demonstrations towards operational deployment, market uptake and wider integration into urban mobility systems. Automated mobility services offer opportunities to address accessibility, efficiency and sustainability challenges while strengthening Europe’s innovation capacity and competitiveness. Yet scaling deployment requires overcoming complex technological, regulatory, financial, organisational and societal challenges. This interactive panel session will explore the pathway from experimentation to implementation through a moderated conversation guided by visuals, including images, maps, deployment examples and key data from real-world experiences. Speakers will share concrete stories of what was implemented, why specific solutions were chosen, who needed to collaborate, and what challenges had to be overcome. A representative from the European Commission’s DG MOVE will set the scene by highlighting recent EU-level CCAM initiatives, including ECAVA, cross-border test beds and ADACities, and their contribution to Europe’s strategic objectives for innovation, digitalisation and competitiveness. Urban practitioners and operators will then share lessons from deployments on the ground, complemented by the perspective of BOLT and Verne as a European mobility technology companies providing shared and on-demand mobility services. The discussion will focus on impacts achieved, evidence available, lessons learned and what is needed to accelerate replication and scaling across Europe. The session will identify practical recommendations for cities, operators and policymakers seeking to turn automated mobility ambitions into sustainable and competitive mobility solutions.
