Future-Ready Last-Mile Logistics: Cycling, Micromobility and Urban Air Mobility

Track:Panel Discussion

Cities across Europe are facing growing pressure from rising e-commerce activity, increasing parcel and returns volumes, and intensified competition for urban space. At the same time, they are expected to reduce emissions, improve road safety and maintain efficient goods distribution. This session explores how cities can shape future-ready last-mile logistics systems through a combination of planning, regulation, infrastructure and behavioural approaches.

The discussion will examine practical solutions such as consolidation and micro-hubs, parcel lockers and pick-up/drop-off networks, cargo-bike logistics, light electric delivery vehicles, zero-emission delivery zones, and kerbside management strategies. Particular attention will be given to how urban logistics can be supported through structured collaboration with logistics operators, retailers and citizens.

Drawing on experiences from recent city pilots and demonstration projects, the session will highlight innovative delivery models, including cargo-bike and light electric vehicle operations, hub-based logistics, consumer-focused delivery schemes, and behavioural nudges that encourage more sustainable choices at the point of purchase. It will also explore how retailers, platform design and consumer preferences influence delivery demand and operational efficiency.

The session aims to provide transferable lessons on how cities can reduce freight impacts while supporting vibrant urban economies and delivering measurable benefits in emissions reduction, safety, public space management and logistics efficiency.
