NEST — Pre-Consequence Control for Solar-Integrated HTL Processes [METU/GÜNAM]

About

NEST is a deterministic pre-consequence control architecture developed by Bounded System Technology Ltd.

For the METU / ODTU-GÜNAM challenge, NEST can complement the existing solar-HTL controller, optimisation system or digital twin by determining whether each proposed action remains admissible in the complete current system state before physical execution.

Relevant state can include solar heat availability, collector and heat-transfer conditions, thermal-storage state, HTL reactor temperature, pressure and flow, feed/process demand, sensor quality and freshness, actuator limits, timing, history and approved physical operating constraints.

This is important because the solar collectors, storage system and HTL reactor can each be operating within their individual limits while a proposed combined action produces an inadmissible system consequence.

NEST therefore applies the minimum justified intervention: PRESERVE valid operation, HOLD when the available state is insufficient or conflicting, REPAIR or REROUTE a recoverable action, or ISOLATE / DENY an inadmissible consequence.

NEST does not need to replace the HTL controller, forecasting system or optimisation technology. The application-specific work is a lightweight solar-HTL state/action adapter around the existing control path.

We propose a controlled baseline-versus-NEST validation in which ODTU-GÜNAM defines the operating limits and supplies independently selected conditions such as rapid solar fluctuations, changing storage state, stale or conflicting sensor information, reactor operating-window pressure and conflicting control objectives.

Evaluation can measure valid-operation preservation, prevention of inadmissible consequences, false interventions, HOLD correctness, repair/reroute performance, process continuity, latency and deterministic replay.

NEST is already implemented and has controlled evidence across multiple digital and physical-domain applications. It has not yet been independently validated on a solar-assisted HTL plant. This challenge is therefore particularly valuable: GÜNAM can control the test conditions and independently determine whether the NEST architecture contributes useful additional control.

Positive, negative and null results would all be retained as evidence.
