Catalytic Advanced Treatment for Water Purification

Chief Scientist & Director at Infinite Water (New Zealand) Limited

New Zealand

About

Infinite Water’s Catalytic Advanced Treatment (CAT) is a high-performance process for water purification that combines advanced oxidation, metal precipitation, and strong disinfection. The core technology uses catalyst to attract water molecules and dissolved contaminants to its granular catalyst surface, where hydroxyl ions are converted into highly reactive hydroxyl radicals. These radicals mineralize organic matter into carbon dioxide, water, salts and mineral acids. Simultaneously, the charged catalytic surface brings metal ions and hydroxyl ions together, forming insoluble metal hydroxides that precipitate and are retained in the filter bed.

CAT is applied across four main areas. In surface-water and direct potable reuse treatment it removes natural organic matter (demonstrated 70 % reduction with Sydney Water), colour, biofouling precursors and emerging contaminants such as PFAS, while lowering chlorine demand and disinfection by-product formation. For groundwater it has removed arsenic from concentrations as high as 500 µg/L to below 0.1 µg/L in field trials in Bangladesh, Thailand and Vietnam. In municipal wastewater it serves as a rapid (≤15 min), low-energy tertiary process that can reduce or eliminate conventional biological treatment, cut aeration energy and enable safe reuse for irrigation or flushing. For seawater desalination it acts as an effective pretreatment before reverse osmosis, lowering operating pressure, eliminating frequent chemical cleaning and producing a clean brine stream from which valuable salts, magnesium, lithium and other minerals can be recovered.

Overall, CAT offers a compact, energy-efficient route to high-quality water that supports circular-economy goals and addresses both conventional and emerging contaminants. Integration of CAT on different water treatment applications has remarkable improvement and revolutionized many water treatment processes with huge competitive advantages in overall CAPEX & OPEX reduction.

This disruptive CAT transformation is looking for strategic investor partners and projects to accelerate its global commercialization and market penetration.
