Focused Ultrasound for Next-Generation Radiotherapy

CEO at CAPRiser Group

Canada

About

A Canadian clinical-stage medical technology company is developing a focused ultrasound platform designed to enhance the effectiveness of existing cancer treatments rather than replace them.

The company's approach combines MRI-guided focused ultrasound with intravenously administered microbubbles. Ultrasound energy is precisely targeted at the tumour, where interaction with the microbubbles temporarily increases tissue permeability and sensitizes the targeted area. Radiation therapy or chemotherapy can then be administered during this treatment window.

For radiotherapy, it aims to address a significant limitation of conventional treatment: patients can require numerous treatment sessions over several weeks, resulting in substantial cumulative radiation exposure, repeated hospital visits and potential damage to surrounding healthy tissue. By priming the tumour before treatment, the company is seeking to enable more effective radiation delivery with the potential for fewer fractions, lower cumulative doses and reduced collateral damage.

The technology is non-invasive and designed to integrate into existing radiation-treatment workflows. The company's proposed treatment process combines microbubble administration, MRI-guided focused-ultrasound pretreatment and conventional radiation delivery in an outpatient setting without sedation or a recovery stay.

The company has progressed beyond an early research concept. According to the company presentation, it has developed a commercial-grade system with a complete technical file, generated approximately $5 million in revenue from research-device sales, operates with manufacturing facilities, and has 15+ granted patents and 5+ pending patents covering areas including transducer architecture, control systems and clinical applications.

The company is seeking investment to scale commercialization, pursue FDA clearance and advance additional oncology clinical programs.
