About

Open Quantum Design is an organization committed to fostering a large collaborative effort between academia, industry, and government. OQD is committed to radical transparency to help scale the talent pipeline and quantum computing technology.

OQD is unique in that the full stack, from bare metal to the end user, will be Open under Apache 2.0 allowing deep collaboration on hardware designs, control infrastructure, software, and APIs.

OQD is working to solve the hard problems collaboratively – building workforce capacity and ensuring technological sovereignty to help scale quantum computing.

SPECIFICS

  1. Democratizing Access to Quantum Hardware — OQD is lowering barriers to quantum computing by developing a modular, affordable trapped-ion platform. This system is being built with openness at its core, ensuring it remains adaptable, upgradable, and never obsolete.

  2. Developing the Next Generation of Quantum Talent — OQD provides opportunities for students, researchers, and industry partners with hands-on experience. The working group structure integrates hardware and software access to cultivate a diverse pipeline of quantum-ready talent.

  3. Building Quantum Infrastructure Through a Co-Build Model — OQD brings together partners to design, develop, and deploy quantum systems collaboratively. This co-build approach ensures that infrastructure is shaped by the needs of its users, that knowledge is shared openly, and that the resulting tools serve the broader ecosystem.
