Challenge 1 – IFMIF-DONES
How can a system be developed for continuous monitoring of position and rotation of solenoids and SRF cavities inside a 4.5 K cryomodule over a 30-year lifetime?
Requirements:
· Accuracy: ±0.1 mm and ±1 mrad
· Maximum heat load: <1 W per component at 4.5 K
· Radiation tolerance: up to 10⁵ Gy accumulated dose
· Low magnetic permeability
· Operation inside 4.5 K thermal shield
· 75 elements to be monitored
Background:
The cold mass string, up to 7 m long, consists of superconducting solenoids and half-wave resonator cavities. Existing technologies in other accelerators face limitations regarding heat load and long-term robustness.
