Session A • European XFEL Key Requirements: From Operation to Upgrades and Development

Location:Impact, Second floorTrack:Technical Seminars

The presentation introduces European XFEL as a major international Big Science facility and explains its mission, scale, and technological complexity to contextualize industrial opportunities. It clarifies that, although construction is complete, the facility is in steady-state operation with continuous upgrades, creating recurring and long-term procurement needs.

The presentation highlights the typical technical requirements encountered in calls for tender, especially in ultra-high vacuum systems, superconducting undulators, cryogenics, precision mechanics, X-ray optics, detectors, and fast electronics.

Companies are made aware that tolerances are often at the micrometer, or even sub-micrometer level, with strict specifications for surface quality, magnetic permeability, cleanliness, helium leak tightness, and long-term stability. It emphasizes recurring needs such as vacuum chambers, beamline components, precision motion systems, cryostats, high-current feedthroughs, optical coatings, high-power lasers, cryocoolers, digitizers, and FPGA-based data acquisition systems.

The presentation explains that European XFEL follows EU public procurement rules, with defined thresholds and formal tendering procedures, and that general purchase conditions must be fully accepted due to its public-equivalent status.

Examples of recent and upcoming requests (2024–2025) illustrate the level of complexity expected, including femtosecond laser systems, high-purity diamonds, cryogenic systems at 4 K, high-load precision stages, and advanced UHV-compatible components.

Overall, the message to industry is that collaboration with European XFEL offers access to “Champions League” level technological challenges, fostering innovation, advanced know-how, market visibility, and potential follow-up opportunities across the broader Big Science ecosystem.
