VSB-TUO

VSB – Technical University of Ostrava (VŠB–TUO, Czech: Vysoká škola báňská – Technická univerzita Ostrava; English: VSB – Technical University of Ostrava) is a public university with a strong focus on engineering and technology, together with economics and selected natural sciences. The university’s main campus and headquarters are located in Ostrava–Poruba at 17. listopadu 2172/15, 708 00 Ostrava-Poruba. The university is structured into seven faculties: the Faculty of Mining and Geology (HGF), Faculty of Materials Science and Technology (FMT), Faculty of Mechanical Engineering (FS), Faculty of Economics (EKF), Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (FEI), Faculty of Civil Engineering (FAST), and Faculty of Safety Engineering (FBI). The historical roots of VŠB–TUO are closely linked to mining education. In its historical overview, the university mentions references as early as 1716 (a mining academy in Jáchymov) and identifies a direct predecessor in the Montan school founded in 1849 in Příbram, oriented toward mining and metallurgy; in 1865 it was elevated to a Mining Academy and later gained full university status.
