The beauty of DIY is that it reaches us at a deeper level than merely purchasing a finished item. The IKEA effect is a known phenomenon where people place a higher value on products that they have partially created themselves. The effect highlights a deep psychological truth - when we invest labour into something, we tend to love and value it more. 

This behavioural insight has significant implications for Net Zero product design and customer experience, because it means creating opportunities for meaningful user involvement. By designing a system where input and assembly plays a role, the perceived value of the product is increased (without necessarily increasing production costs) because the customer can “co-create,” reinforcing the emotive bond to the finished item. These actions don’t just reduce carbon footprints—they cultivate a lasting sense of personal responsibility, ownership, and engagement with the broader environmental cause.

From these insights, the idea of Panotherm was born. Our patented DIY window insulation panel is a novel cost effective solution to help people quickly keep their homes warm and secure in the short medium and long term.
