About
Nowadays building (systems) need to score high on energy efficiency (heating & cooling), sustainability, and low-emission, and one needs precise measurements to be able to design well to your own requirements and/or to certify according to the suitable norms, standards and f.e. EU requirements. The Swiss building technology and energy laboratory is an accredited testing facility (ISO/IEC 17025:2017) recognised by the Swiss Accreditation Service (SAS) offering such with strong integration into applied research, and as well offering know-how (practical and theoretical) related to energy efficiency, sustainability, and low-emission building systems.
ISO/IEC 17025:20117 is the specific Swiss accreditation certifying that the Building technology and energy laboratory possesses the technical competence to perform thermic, fluidic, and acoustic measurements on components, systems, and materials in the building sector.
Accredited Scope (ISO/IEC 17025:2017): • Thermal & Flow Testing: Heat recovery components (EN 308), air and water heat exchangers (EN 1148, EN 1216), valves (EN 1267), aerodynamic testing (EN 1751) • Air Handling Units: EN 1886 mechanical and leakage testing • Ventilation Devices: EN 13141-7/-8 (residential ventilation) • Thermal Comfort: EN ISO 7730, ASHRAE 55 (American National Standard published by ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers) • Indoor Air Quality & Leakage: EN ISO 12569 • Acoustics: EN ISO 3741–3747, EN ISO 9614, EN 12102, SIA 181 (published by the Swiss Society of Engineers and Architects (SIA)), ASTM C423 (published by ASTM International (American Society for Testing and Materials) Research Infrastructure: • Climatic Chamber (6.3 × 4.2 × 3.35 m) for comfort, airflow, and energy testing • Acoustic Lab (100–10 000 Hz dual-room setup) • Ventilation & Hydraulics Test Rigs for air, heat, and water systems • NODES (New Opportunities for Decentralized Energy Systems) Lab – thermal networks testbed (up to 40 kW, water/glycol) • Cleanroom ISO 7–9 for air quality and efficiency studies • Field Equipment for on-site HVAC monitoring, data visualization, and simulation
Cooperation and Projects: The lab participates in Horizon Europe, Eurostars, and national innovation projects, providing a bridge between research and industry. Cooperation (R&D or commercially) typically involves: • Joint project definition and execution • Testing and validation for new HVAC products • Modelling, simulation, and digital twin integration • Bringing in know-how (practical and theoretical) related to energy efficiency, sustainability, and low-emission building systems Advantages and Innovations The Swiss Building Technology Laboratory stands out because it combines very broad, building‑scale HVAC, energy and acoustic test capabilities under one ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation (STS 0179) with strong integration into applied research and EU/Horizon‑type innovation projects, rather than acting only as a narrow product test facility.
• Cross-domain testing (air, water, sound, comfort) in one integrated facility • Validated methods per European & international standards • Combines simulation and physical testing using digital twins • Partner in certification & product development for innovative HVAC systems • Supports industry, SMEs, and academia in accelerating market-ready solutions • Practical and theoretical expertise in energy efficiency, sustainability, and low-emission building systems
-> Official Swiss Accreditation under ISO/IEC 17025:2017 for heat, flow, and acoustic measurements -> Recognised internationally via EA (European Co-operation for Accreditation) & ILAC (International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation) agreements
Expected Role of a Partner The specific area of activity of the partner: • Manufacturers of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) • Manufacturers of energy systems • Manufacturer of acoustic systems • Building sector related to components, systems, and materials • Engineering and design offices • Universities and R&D institutions
