Advanced Materials Innovation for Hydrogen, Energy & Recycling

Group Leader at Decarbonization department (AIMPLAS) at AIMPLAS

Paterna, Spain

About

AIMPLAS drives advanced materials development to accelerate the energy transition and circular economy. In hydrogen storage, the center develops reinforcements and liners with thermoplastic tapes to improve permeability in type IV/V tanks, increases storage capacity by 30% using shaped solid adsorbents, and reduces cryogenic losses with insulating foams. AIMPLAS also designs key components for electrolyzers and batteries (electrocatalysts, membranes, bipolar plates, electrolytes, high-load metallic and ceramic materials), and thermoplastic pipelines for hydrogen transport.

In energy carriers, AIMPLAS works on liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHCs) derived from biomass or plastic waste, and develops catalysts for ammonia dehydrogenation using low-energy methodologies (photochemical, microwave, electrochemical).

In recycling, the center focuses on recovering critical raw materials (CRMs) from WEEE through RM, bioremediation, and electrodeposition.

In energy solutions, AIMPLAS advances 3D printing of flexible fuel cells, solar integration in greenhouses, and composite laminates for rapid deployment in disaster zones or off-grid areas. It also develops encapsulation systems to extend solar cell lifetime and improve recyclability, thermoplastic pultrusion for wind energy, luminescent systems for rapid maintenance detection, reinforced pipes for geothermal applications, solvent-free electrodes and electrolytes, battery housings with organosheets, and bipolar plates.

These innovations position AIMPLAS as a strategic partner in hydrogen technologies, renewable energy, and advanced recycling.
