3D imaging of composites
Senior Specialist at Danish Technological Institute

About
Hidden internal features in composites, such as porosity, fiber misalignment, delamination, and inclusions, create uncertainty in design and validation, and leave failure modes unexplained.
At the Danish Technological Institute, we provide high‑resolution phase‑contrast synchrotron X‑ray imaging (tomography) to make microstructure visible and measurable, providing clearer insight into component performance. We support you from design optimization in R&D to in‑service failure analysis - whether as a standard analysis service or a collaborative development partner.
What you get
-
Quantified porosity and void content (size, location, volume fraction)
-
Fiber architecture and orientation mapping (alignment, distribution)
-
Thickness and dimensional metrology for complex geometries
-
Foreign inclusion detection
-
Crack initiation, propagation, and interfacial defects
-
Delamination detection and extent mapping
-
Ultra‑high resolution up to 300 nm voxel size (sample dependent)
We can also analyze composites in situ, i.e., during a process, to understand changes in properties under the influence of mechanical stress, temperature, or pressure. This allows us to e.g. follow crack initiation and growth to the point of failure.
