Optimization of Fresh Concrete Transport from the Plant to the Construction Site

Head of R&D&I at Hormiconsa

Barcelona, Spain

About

Sponsoring Company: HORMICONSA
Sector: Construction / Logistics / Fresh Concrete

Context:

The production of fresh concrete at HORMICONSA plants is planned daily based on customer orders for the following day. Normally, by around 4:00 PM, there is a clear forecast of the volume and location of deliveries, which allows the necessary number of trucks for distribution to be determined.

A typical day may include:

·         Number of orders: 12

·         Total number of trips: 46

·         Number of contracted trucks: 10

Concrete mixer trucks are billed by the hour, so inefficient planning leads directly to increased costs.

The complexity of the challenge:

The main difficulty lies in the need to dynamically adapt to constant changes throughout the day:

·         Changes in order volume (increases or decreases)

·         Last-minute cancellations

·         Variability in concrete unloading time at the construction site

·         Unexpected events such as traffic incidents that generate uncertainty in travel times and, consequently, in the quality of the concrete due to delays in proper placement on site

This scenario makes transport management highly complex and demands fast, well-informed decision-making.

What we are looking for:

At HORMICONSA, we are seeking an intelligent digital tool that can:

·         Analyze all operational variables in real time (orders, locations, traffic, unloading time, etc.)

·         Assist the plant manager in making optimal decisions at any given moment

·         Improve customer service while simultaneously optimizing transportation costs

The ultimate goal is to achieve a technological solution that enables more efficient, flexible, and adaptable logistics to meet the ever-changing context of the construction sector.
